Omoinotake – 3 Track Picks

Recently, I discovered the music artist Omoinotake through the opening theme of the anime ブルーピリオド (Blue Period). I had never seen the show before (I had only vaguely heard of it), but somehow, the opening theme just felt right. After having it on repeat for a little while, I decided to take a look at more of the artist’s music. Below are the 3 standout tracks I’ve found so far, with some extra commentary as it felt necessary.
Bonus note for Japanese learners: The videos I have embedded below have both English and Japanese subtitles to learn from! (With the exception of #3, but there is another version I linked to that does.)
#1: EVERBLUE
My fiancé put it pretty well: “It’s got good ‘swing’ to it.” The bass in this track is pretty great. I wasn’t sold on the mid part where it starts to get slower, but it’s grown on me upon repeated listenings.
I can’t escape the the fact that the original context I heard it in was its TV version, with the animation accompanying it. . To be honest, I do think it helped contribute to my initial enjoyment. The anime visuals pop and the track’s main beats are amplified by said visuals. It’s a damn good song on its own, but it’s also nice to get the experience in the complete package, and I actually never skip the intro for this show because of it.
(The anime opening theme version has also been unofficially posted here, hopefully that link works for you!)
#2: 夏の幻 (Natsu no Maboroshi)
Some parts of it feel “traditionally Japanese” (in the same way Shiki no Uta by MINMI does). That, plus the relaxing nature of it made it stick out to me. It’s been reminding me of fair-weathered comfortable moments in the summer, and is one of the tracks I have been playing to wind down at the end of the day.
#3: One Day
An upbeat song, also with its fair share of ‘swing’. Something about the “ups” and “downs” of the chorus/stanzas neighboring the chorus appeals to me. The ‘sprinkled in English’ also is spoken well and doesn’t distract from the song; rather, it fits in really well with the rest of the flow.
Bonus note for Japanese learners: The video above does not contain Japanese subtitles, but this version of the song does!
Extra Credit
- By My Side – A track that’s positive and cozy.
- プリクエル (Prequel) – A track with a cool retro/vaporwave-like feel to it.
General Thoughts
I’ve only really seen the surface of this band’s discography (which is likely reflected in these picks), but so far I’ve been enjoying what I’ve been hearing from their singles. The vocals of the lead and sound of the tracks I’ve heard remind me of Official Hige Dandism, but that’s not a bad thing as I enjoy a lot of their music too.
I hope to make another one of these posts once I’ve had more time to listen to their other tracks! Are there any you’d recommend? Please feel free to post in the comments!
